“It is the group which is the healing agent.”
— Irvin D. Yalom, MD

Group therapy is a mental health clinician-led experience where a small group of people come together to explore shared challenges like anxiety, stress, or relationship patterns. Guided by a licensed mental health clinician (therapist/psychologist), group members learn emotional and relational skills, gain insight by hearing different perspectives, and experience the relief of being understood by others who truly get it. Group therapy isn’t about forced sharing or comparing struggles—it’s a structured, supportive space where connection itself becomes part of the healing process.

FAQs

  • Do I have to talk in group therapy?

No. You’re never forced to share.

You can participate by listening, reflecting, or sharing when you feel ready. Many people start out quietly and speak more over time.

  • Is group therapy awkward?

Honestly? It can feel awkward at first.

Most people feel nervous during the first session. That usually fades quickly once you realize others feel the same way—and the therapist helps guide the conversation.

  • What if I don’t relate to anyone?

That’s more common than you think at the beginning.

Groups are structured around shared themes (like anxiety or relationships), so even if your experiences look different, the underlying feelings often overlap.

  • Is this like a support group or actual therapy?

    It’s actual therapy.

Groups are led by licensed mental health clinicians (i.e., psychologists or therapists) and include structure, guidance, and skill-building—not just open venting.

  • Can I keep my camera off?

Unfortunately, no, for the safety of the group. We need to be able to know who is in attendance. It also helps build connection.

  • Will people know my personal information?

    No.

Participants agree to confidentiality guidelines. You choose what you share, and identifying details are never required.

  • What if someone I know is in the group?

    We screen participants carefully.

If there’s a potential conflict, we’ll help you find another group that feels safer.

  • Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

    For some people, yes.

Research shows group therapy can be just as effective as individual therapy for anxiety, stress, and relationship concerns—sometimes even more supportive because of shared experience.

  • What if I cry or get emotional?

    That’s okay.

Emotions are a normal part of therapy. You’re not expected to hold it together or perform for anyone.

  • How long do I have to commit?

    It depends on the group.

Some groups run in short cycles (like 8–10 weeks), while others are ongoing. We’ll always be clear about expectations upfront.

  • Is this a crisis service?

    No.

Our groups are for non-emergency mental health support. If you’re in crisis, we’ll help connect you to immediate resources.

  • I’ve never done therapy. Is that okay?

    Absolutely.

Many people join group therapy as their first therapy experience. There is a screening intake that you will complete prior to joining a group to ensure it is an appropriate and good fit.

  • What group is right for me?

You will complete an intake call with us before starting any group. If you are stuck on which group you want to join, use our “quick compare list” below and we can discuss these more on your intake call.

  • Not sure what group you should join? …..

Feeling anxious or stuck in your head?

    • Anxiety, But Make It Manageable

    Emotionally exhausted or burned out?

    • Burned Out & Still Trying

    Struggling with dating or relationships?

    • Why Is Dating So Hard?
